AI certifications in Germany: which ones are worth it?

  • Updated October 21, 2026

Key takeaways

  • No AI certification is required by law in Germany: the European Commission states that Article 4 of the EU AI Act does not require a certificate and that an internal record of training is enough.
  • AI certifications in Germany fall into six types: IHK certificate courses, personnel certifications from bodies like TÜV or DEKRA, university certificates, vendor certifications from Microsoft, AWS or Google, certificates from training providers, and free online certificates.
  • Vendor certifications such as the AWS Certified AI Practitioner (USD 100, valid for three years) are taken in English and recognized internationally, which makes them useful for international job seekers.
  • Funding applies to training, not to the certificate: an AZAV-approved AI course can be covered up to 100% with a Bildungsgutschein or through the QCG if you meet the requirements.

AI certifications in Germany range from a two-hour webinar with a PDF to a 10-month course with three official AWS exams. Both are called “certificates.” They tell an employer very different things about what you can do.

If you are new to the German job market, the landscape is even harder to read. What does an IHK certificate mean? Is a TÜV certificate better than one from Microsoft? And do you need any of them under the EU AI Act? This guide answers those questions and shows which AI certification fits your situation.

What is an AI certification?

An AI certification is proof that you completed training or passed an exam in artificial intelligence. The term is not protected, so it helps to separate four kinds of proof:

  • Certificate of attendance: confirms that you took part, nothing more.
  • Course certificate: confirms that you completed a course, often with a test or project.
  • Personnel certification: an independent body tests your knowledge against a fixed standard.
  • State-recognized exam: for example an IHK advanced training exam under the German Vocational Training Act. For AI, no such exam exists yet.

Employers mainly look at two things: whether you were tested, and who did the testing.

Do you need an AI certification under the EU AI Act?

No, you do not need an AI certification to comply with the EU AI Act. Article 4 requires companies that provide or use AI systems to take measures that support the AI literacy of their staff. In its official Q&A on AI literacy, the European Commission states clearly that no certificate is needed. Organizations can keep an internal record of training instead.

Since the Digital Omnibus on AI came into force in July 2026, Article 4 is worded even more clearly as a duty to take suitable measures. There is no required knowledge level, minimum number of hours or individual test. Our guide to EU AI Act Article 4 explains what this means for companies in practice.

A certificate can still be useful as part of that record, or as proof for your own job search. Be careful with providers that advertise a “mandatory AI certificate.”

Which types of AI certifications are there in Germany?

There are six common types of AI certifications in Germany. They differ in who issues them, how strictly they test and how well they are known outside Germany.

IHK certificate courses

IHK certificate courses such as “KI-Manager (IHK)” are offered by Germany’s regional Chambers of Industry and Commerce. They target professionals and managers and cover AI strategy, business use cases, ethics and existing AI tools. Most end with an internal test or a project, and they are usually taught in German.

An IHK certificate is not a state-recognized IHK exam. The IHK brand is well known to German employers, but length, price and content vary from chamber to chamber.

Personnel certifications from TÜV or DEKRA

TÜV and DEKRA are German testing organizations that also certify people. In the AI field, DEKRA offers certifications such as “KI-Beauftragte:r (DEKRA)”, roughly an AI officer role. You take the exam with the certification body, often after a preparation course from a training partner. These certifications fit compliance-related roles, for example if you are responsible for AI policies in your company.

Do not confuse this with the AI system certification that TÜV organizations announced in 2026. That program tests software and applications, not people.

University certificates

German universities and their continuing education academies offer AI certificate programs, often part-time over several weeks or months. Some award ECTS credits. They suit you if you want to strengthen an academic profile. Check costs, language and entry requirements with each provider.

Vendor certifications

Vendor certifications prove that you understand the AI services of a specific platform. They are standardized, recognized worldwide and taken in English, which makes them the easiest certificates to compare across countries.

  • Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals: an entry-level certification for AI concepts and Azure AI services. Microsoft retired the previous exam AI-900 on June 30, 2026. The successor exam AI-901 now leads to the certification.
  • AWS Certified AI Practitioner: an entry-level certification for AI, machine learning and generative AI on Amazon Web Services. The exam costs USD 100, takes 90 minutes and is valid for three years.
  • Google AI Essentials: a short online course by Google with a completion certificate, about ten hours long. There is no separate proctored exam.

Certificates from training providers

Training providers issue a certificate when you complete a course. Its value comes from the course length, the projects and the provider’s approval. If the provider is AZAV-approved, German public funding through the Bildungsgutschein or the QCG is possible.

Free online certificates

Free courses are a good way to explore AI before committing to longer training. Elements of AI from the University of Helsinki takes about 30 hours and ends with a free certificate. If you are just starting out, our overview of AI courses for beginners shows which next steps make sense.

What do German certificates like IHK and TÜV mean?

German certificates like IHK and TÜV are well known inside Germany but carry less weight abroad. IHK stands for Industrie- und Handelskammer, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce. TÜV is a group of technical inspection organizations, best known for car inspections and product safety. Both brands signal reliability to German employers, especially in traditional companies and the Mittelstand.

If you plan to work for an international company or in English, a vendor certification or a project portfolio usually travels better. If you apply to German-speaking employers, an IHK or TÜV/DEKRA certificate can help, but you will normally need German at B2 level or higher to take those courses.

Which AI certification fits your situation?

The right AI certification depends on what you want to do with it.

Your situationBest-fit proof
You want to use AI in your current jobtraining provider certificate from a part-time or short course, possibly funded via QCG
You are job-seeking and want to add AI to your profileAZAV-approved course with a Bildungsgutschein and a final project
You are responsible for AI policies at workIHK certificate course or personnel certification
You want to work technically with AI platformsvendor certification, ideally as part of longer training
You want to find out whether AI is for youfree course such as Elements of AI

Certificate or project: what convinces employers?

A certificate gets your application noticed. A concrete project convinces in the interview, because it answers the question every hiring manager has: can this person do it at work?

Take Elena. As a learning and development manager, she tracked trainings, attendance and scores by hand. During the AI for Business Course at WBS CODING SCHOOL, she built an automated training management system for her own team. The data sits in Airtable, Make sends reminders and results to Slack automatically, and she created three basic AI trainings with HeyGen. That project says more about her AI skills than any certificate on its own.

When you choose training, check that you leave with both a certificate and a project you can show.

Can AI certifications be funded in Germany?

Yes, but funding in Germany covers the training, not the certificate itself. Both the training provider and the course must be AZAV-approved, and the Agentur für Arbeit or Jobcenter decides case by case.

  • Bildungsgutschein: for people who are unemployed or about to lose their job. International residents can apply if their residence permit includes the right to work. Our guide on how to get a Bildungsgutschein walks you through the process.
  • QCG (Qualifizierungschancengesetz): for employees, with the application made together with the employer.

Vendor exam fees are usually covered when the exam is part of the funded course, not as a standalone cost. Read more about AI education with the education voucher, or see all funding options.

AI certifications FAQ

Is there a free AI certification?

Yes, there are free AI certifications. Elements of AI from the University of Helsinki is free, including the certificate, and covers the basics in about 30 hours. Microsoft also offers free learning modules for Azure AI Fundamentals, but the exam itself is paid. Free certificates are a good start, though they rarely replace tested training on a CV.

Is the Azure AI Fundamentals certification worth it?

Yes, the Azure AI Fundamentals certification is worth it if you want a recognized entry-level AI credential and plan to work with Microsoft tools. Since June 30, 2026, you earn it by passing exam AI-901, which replaced AI-900. Fundamentals certifications from Microsoft do not need to be renewed. On its own, it shows conceptual knowledge rather than hands-on skills.

Do I need German for AI certifications in Germany?

No, you do not need German for most international AI certifications. Vendor certifications from Microsoft, AWS and Google are available in English. German IHK and TÜV or DEKRA certificates, however, are usually taught and tested in German. Many funded courses in Germany, including several at WBS CODING SCHOOL, are taught in English.

How long is an AI certification valid?

How long an AI certification is valid depends on the issuer. Course certificates from training providers and IHK certificates do not expire. AWS certifications are valid for three years, while Microsoft Fundamentals certifications do not need renewal. For personnel certifications, the certification body sets the validity period.

Conclusion

AI certifications in Germany are not required by law, but they are useful proof when you know who issued them and how you were tested. Under the EU AI Act, documented training is enough. For your career, the strongest signal combines a tested certificate with a project you can show in an interview. Vendor certifications travel best internationally, while IHK and TÜV are mainly known in Germany. If you want to apply AI in your job, the AI for Business Course and the AI Agents & Automations Course offer a fundable path with a final project.
